When it comes to choosing a genuine security screen for your Sunshine Coast or North Brisbane home, there are two main mesh types that meet Australian Standard AS5039 — stainless steel woven mesh and perforated aluminium.

You may have also heard of diamond grille screens. It’s important to understand upfront that diamond grille is a barrier screen, not a security screen. It does not comply with AS5039 and does not carry the same warranties as a true security product. Diamond grille has its place — it’s a cost-effective option for lower-risk areas like balconies and side doors where you mainly want insect protection and a deterrent — but it should never be confused with a genuine AS5039 compliant security screen.

This guide focuses purely on the two real contenders for home security — stainless steel and perforated aluminium — and helps you decide which is right for your home.

What Is AS5039 and Why Does It Matter?

Australian Standard AS5039-2008 is the national benchmark for security screen doors and window screens. To achieve compliance, a product must pass five independent tests:

  • Dynamic impact test — withstands significant physical force
  • Jemmy test — resists being prised open
  • Pull test — cannot be pulled away from the frame
  • Knife shear test — resists cutting attempts
  • Probe test — cannot be punctured to reach a door handle

Both stainless steel woven mesh and perforated aluminium screens can be manufactured to meet AS5039. However — and this is critical — not all products on the market actually do. Always ask your installer to confirm AS5039 compliance before purchasing. At Slideit Security Screens and Blinds, every security screen and door we supply meets this standard.

Stainless Steel Woven Mesh — The Gold Standard

Stainless steel woven mesh is widely regarded as the premium choice in Australian home security. It is made from high-tensile wire woven into a fine, strong mesh that is both extremely difficult to breach and surprisingly unobtrusive to look through.

Key advantages:

Exceptional strength — High-tensile stainless steel woven mesh significantly exceeds the minimum AS5039 requirements. It is extremely resistant to cutting, impact and forced entry.

Outstanding visibility and airflow — Because the mesh is woven from very fine wire, it creates a transparent barrier. You can see clearly through it and enjoy excellent natural airflow — perfect for Queensland’s warm climate.

Superior corrosion resistance — Standard stainless steel performs well in most environments. For coastal properties on the Sunshine Coast within 5km of the ocean, 316 marine grade stainless steel is the recommended choice. Marine grade contains molybdenum which gives it exceptional resistance to salt air and coastal humidity.

Long term durability — Quality stainless steel security screens come with manufacturer warranties of up to 15 years — a reflection of how long they are built to last.

Considerations:

  • Higher upfront cost than perforated aluminium
  • Limited colour options compared to aluminium
  • Heavier than aluminium — requires robust frames

Perforated Aluminium — The Strong Mid-Range Option

Perforated aluminium security screens are manufactured from aluminium sheet that has been precision-punched with thousands of small holes. When manufactured to AS5039 standard, perforated aluminium is a genuine security product — strong, reliable and a significant step up from basic flyscreens or barrier screens.

Key advantages:

AS5039 compliant — Quality perforated aluminium security screens meet Australian Standard requirements and provide genuine forced-entry resistance.

More affordable — Perforated aluminium is typically more cost-effective than stainless steel, making it a good option for homeowners wanting real security across multiple windows without the premium price tag.

Wide colour range — Aluminium can be powder coated in a wide variety of colours to match your home’s existing frames and aesthetic — something stainless steel cannot easily offer.

Lightweight — Easier to install on larger window openings where the weight of stainless steel frames could be a consideration.

Privacy — The perforated pattern provides a degree of privacy from outside while still allowing you to see out, which some homeowners prefer.

Considerations:

  • Not recommended within 1km of the Sunshine Coast coastline — aluminium is more susceptible to corrosion from salt air than marine grade stainless steel
  • Slightly less visibility through the screen compared to fine stainless steel mesh
  • Generally lower impact resistance than high-tensile stainless steel

What About Diamond Grille?

We mentioned this at the start and it’s worth clarifying in more detail because there is a lot of confusion in the market.

Diamond grille is a barrier screen — not a security screen.

Diamond grille uses a welded aluminium diamond pattern and does not meet AS5039. It does not carry security screen warranties. It is best suited for:

  • Balcony doors and windows
  • Side doors with restricted access
  • Upper floor windows
  • Areas where insect protection is the primary concern

Diamond grille provides a basic level of deterrence and insect protection at an affordable price — and that makes it a genuinely useful product in the right application. But it should never be installed on a main entry door or ground floor window as a substitute for a genuine AS5039 security screen.

At Slideit, we are completely transparent about this distinction with every customer. We will never upsell you on a product you don’t need — and we will never install a barrier screen where a security screen is required.
