The Right Tool

When Is a Retractable Screen the Right Answer?

Most openings around North Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are best served by a standard flyscreen or a security screen — and we’ll tell you so. But some openings defeat every fixed screen, and that’s exactly where a retractable earns its keep:

  • No reveal to work with — many older Queenslanders and heritage homes have window and door reveals with no room for a standard flyscreen or security screen. A retractable can face-fit to the architrave or wall, which often makes it the only screening option.
  • Wide openings — French doors, bifolds and stackers turn a wall into fresh air, and no fixed screen can follow them. Pleated retractable screens glide across spans up to 9.5 metres and fold away when the doors close.
  • Openings you live through — front doors, balcony doors and walkways where a fixed screen would crowd the opening or block the view. A retractable disappears into a slim frame the moment you don’t need it.
  • Patios and garages — our heavy-duty alloy-mesh range encloses an outdoor space against insects while the breeze keeps moving, with a low-profile track you can roll straight over.

One honest note: retractables are a premium product. If a standard flyscreen would do the job for less — or what you actually need is a security screen — we’ll say so at the measure.

03 / Straight Talk

Retractable Screens Are Not Security Screens

A genuine security screen has to survive Australian Standard AS 5039 forced-entry testing — knife shear, impact, anti-jemmy and pull tests. No screen in the retractable range is tested to that standard, and no honest installer will tell you otherwise. Retractable mesh is engineered to glide and fold away, not to resist a break-in.

That includes the toughest of the three, Durashield. Please note: Durashield is an insect and light-control product only. It is not certified to AS/NZS 5039 and is not a security product.

What retractables do brilliantly is everything else: insects out, breeze and light in, clear views, and screening for openings nothing else fits. If forced-entry protection is what you’re after, that’s our core business — CommandeX security screens that comply with AS 5039 when fitted with the 3-point locking system. Many homes sensibly run both: security screens on the entries, retractables where reveals or spans rule everything else out.

04 / Straight Talk on Cost

What Affects the Price of Retractable Screens?

Every screen is made to your exact opening, so the price depends on what we measure. What moves it:

  • Opening size — wider and taller openings use more mesh and track, and a double centre-closing screen costs more than a single.
  • Screen type — the slim roll-away, pleated and heavy-duty alloy ranges each price differently; tougher mesh costs more.
  • Doors vs windows — a door screen costs more than a window screen in the same range.
  • Fit and access — reveal fit versus face fit, and how straightforward your opening is to work on, change the installation side of the quote.
  • How many openings — screening several openings in one visit works out better per screen than one at a time.

Retractables are a premium product — that’s the honest truth of the category. We measure at your home, the quote is a fixed price for your exact openings, and if a standard flyscreen would do the job for less, we’ll tell you on the spot.

Straight Answers

Retractable Screens FAQ

Are retractable screens security screens?

No — and that includes our toughest option, Durashield. Please note: Durashield is an insect and light-control product only. It is not certified to AS/NZS 5039 and is not a security product. If forced-entry protection is the goal, look at our AS 5039-tested security screen range instead.

Can you put fly screens on French doors?

Yes. Retractable pleated screens are made for exactly this — the mesh folds away into a slim frame, so both doors still swing freely. A single screen covers openings up to 5 metres, and double centre-closing screens span up to 9.5 metres. Bifold and stacker doors work the same way.

What is a pleated fly screen?

A pleated fly screen uses concertina-folded mesh that glides across the opening on a slim track instead of rolling into a cassette. Wind hooks keep the mesh on its track on breezy days, and the mesh can be replaced without removing screws or pulling the frame apart.

Can you fit fly screens to a Queenslander with no reveal?

Yes — this is where retractable screens shine. When there’s no reveal depth for a standard flyscreen or security screen, a retractable can face-fit to the architrave or wall instead. It’s often the only screening option for older Queenslanders and heritage homes, and every screen is custom-made to the opening.

How do you clean a retractable fly screen?

Gently — a soft brush or a vacuum on low keeps the mesh clear. The Simplicity range goes further: its mesh lifts out in seconds thanks to a patented design, the frame and mesh can be washed with boiling water, and a self-cleaning brush works as you slide it.

How wide can a retractable screen go?

Up to 9.5 metres with a double centre-closing pleated screen — wide enough for most bifold and stacker openings. Single pleated screens cover up to 5 metres, our heavy-duty alloy-mesh range spans up to 8 metres with double screens, and every screen is made to your exact opening.
