Barrier Screen or Security Screen? Know Exactly What You’re Buying
Plenty of doors around Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are sold with the word “security” on them without ever passing a security test. We do it differently. A barrier screen keeps insects out, stands up to pets and makes your home a less inviting target — but it is not tested to Australian Standard AS 5039, and we’ll never pretend otherwise.
A genuine security screen has to survive AS 5039 forced-entry testing — knife shear, impact, anti-jemmy and pull tests. Barrier screens skip that testing, and that’s a big part of why they cost less. The easy way to tell them apart: a real security screen carries an AS 5039 compliance label. No label, no security rating.

The Honest Upgrade Path
If what you’re really after is forced-entry protection, don’t buy a barrier screen and hope. CommandeX’s own product literature calls perforated aluminium security screens “a modern and more secure replacement for dated Diamond Grilles” — and that step up costs less than you might think.
Xceed is the budget-friendly step into genuine AS 5039-tested security. SecureView Eclipx is the full step up: 316 marine-grade woven stainless steel with clear, uninterrupted views. Many of our customers mix and match — a tested security screen on the front and back doors, barrier screens or flyscreens on windows and secondary openings.

Bought for the right reasons, barrier screens are excellent value. They’re the honest choice when:

- Insects are the enemy — BasiX’s 1.406mm mesh aperture is tight enough to stop most sand flies, not just flies and mosquitoes.
- You want a deterrent on a budget — a screen the street can see makes your home a less inviting target, even without a security rating.
- You’re screening secondary openings — upstairs windows and patio doors where you want airflow, while the main entries carry tested security screens.

What Affects the Price of Barrier Screens?
Every screen is made to measure, so the price depends on your actual openings. What moves it:
- Product choice — flyscreens are the entry point; Diamond Grille and BasiX barrier screens cost more, and all three sit well below AS 5039 security screens.
- Doors vs windows — a door costs more than a window screen in the same product.
- Size and opening type — sliding, hinged and stacking doors each frame up differently, and bigger openings use more material.
- Mesh upgrades — swapping standard fibreglass flywire for heavy-duty pet mesh adds cost.
- How many screens — doing several openings in one visit works out better per screen than one at a time.

Barrier Screens FAQ
Are barrier screens security screens?
No. Barrier screens like BasiX and Diamond Grille are not tested to Australian Standard AS 5039 for forced entry — that’s a big part of why they cost less. They’re honest protection against insects and pets and a visual deterrent, not certified security. If you need real security, see our AS 5039-tested range.
What’s the difference between a barrier screen and a security screen?
Testing. A genuine security screen must pass the AS 5039 forced-entry tests — knife shear, impact, anti-jemmy and pull. A barrier screen doesn’t have to pass any of them. The quickest check: ask for the AS 5039 compliance label. No label means it’s a barrier screen, whatever it’s called.
Are diamond grille doors security doors?
Usually not. Most 7mm diamond grille doors — including ours — are barrier doors and aren’t tested to AS 5039, though a few brands sell security-rated grille systems. We’d rather tell you that straight. If you want certified forced-entry protection, our Xceed and SecureView ranges are the honest step up.
Will barrier screens stand up to pets?
Yes — pets are one of their best uses. BasiX uses a pet-resistant 316 stainless woven mesh and offers pet door options, while Diamond Grille doors and flyscreens can be fitted with heavy-duty pet mesh instead of standard fibreglass flywire. Tell us about your pets when we measure.
Do barrier screens keep insects out?
Yes. BasiX’s woven mesh has a 1.406mm hole aperture — tight enough to stop most sand flies, not just mosquitoes. Diamond Grille doors carry fibreglass insect mesh behind the grille, and our custom flyscreens do the same job on windows. Full airflow, no bugs.
Can I upgrade from barrier screens to security screens later?
Yes, any time. Every screen is measured and made individually, so you can start with barrier screens and upgrade the openings that matter later. Many homes mix the two — a security screen on the front entry, barrier screens or flyscreens on windows and secondary doors.
